Anthony Lucas

At their March 19 meeting, the Fayetteville Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the hiring of Anthony Lucas as the new head football coach at Fayetteville High School.

A former standout at the University of Arkansas, Lucas earned All-SEC honors and was a key contributor to multiple SEC West Division championship teams while also achieving Academic Honor Roll recognition. He went on to play professionally, spending time with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. His excellence and character were later recognized with induction into both the University of Arkansas Football Hall of Honor and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Lucas began his coaching career at Pulaski Academy, where he played a pivotal role in one of the most successful programs in the state, contributing to six state championships. His offensive expertise, leadership, and ability to connect with players helped establish a standard of excellence that has become synonymous with the program.

He later became the head coach at Pulaski Academy, where he continued that success at the highest level of Arkansas high school football. Under his leadership, the Bruins also won state championships in 2021 and 2022.

“Coach Lucas is a proven leader with a clear vision for building a championship program,” said Fayetteville athletic director Steve Janski. “He understands what it takes to develop young men, build a strong staff, and lead within a passionate football community. His experience, character, and commitment to excellence make him the right person to lead Fayetteville Football forward.”

Coach Lucas is known not only for his success on the field, but also for his focus on relationships, accountability, and developing the whole student-athlete. His leadership aligns with the district’s commitment to providing a positive, structured, and growth-oriented environment for all students.

He and his wife, Devae, along with their daughters Kassidy and Kaylee, are excited to join the Fayetteville community.

“I am honored and excited for the opportunity to lead the Fayetteville football program,” said Lucas. “This is a special place with a strong tradition, incredible support, and outstanding student-athletes. I look forward to building relationships and working together to pursue excellence in every area of the program.”

A community meet and greet will be held to welcome Coach Lucas at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19 in the Purple Reign Room at the Sports, Wellness & Academic Center at Harmon Stadium.
